I love a surprise, especially a creative one. One of my favorite moments in my life is that moment after I’ve been working so hard and then – Boom! – I can see the design, the plot comes to life, a formless piece of knitting becomes a sweater.

I think that’s why I’m always drawn to Mystery Knit-Alongs. My pattern highlight list on Ravelry fills with them. I am always poking around them and threatening myself with actually participating.

So, when I saw the Halloween Mystery Knit-Along from Boo Knits, I could not resist, especially when it also gives a little nod to William Shakespeare in honor of the 400th anniversary of his death.

Shakespeare plus Halloween plus knitting a potentially gorgeous lace shawl with beads?

Yes, please! May I have some more?!

Yesterday, I found my yarn at Sew Steamboat. Instead of the silk laceweight called for in the pattern, I’m going to be using Malabrigo Sock. Since the piece is being knitted on US5’s and US6’s and uses size 6 beads (and I’ll have an extra five hundred yards of yarn), I feel secure in my choice.

I’ve picked Abril (the variegated on the bottom) and Violeta Africana (the solid on top) as my two colors. Now, if someone asked me to pick two yarns to work together in a piece, I’d never pair these two as they are so close and the variegated color contains the same purple as the solid. However, the introduction to the MKAL specifically indicated this sort of combination (“This will produce a dreamy effect rather than a solid stripe in your shawl.”).

I’m so excited for October to begin! The first clue shows up on October first, and I’ll be there with my needles, ready to cast on!

Now I just have to dig through my storage container and find the right beads.

Yikes! It’s already scary!
